Ohio Wesleyan Student Marina Metzler Presents Research at Science Symposium

2010 Oct 7

More than 40 Ohio Wesleyan University student-scientists shared the results of their 10-week summer science research projects Sept. 20 at the university's 18th annual Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium.

Marina Metzler of Columbia, a 2008 graduate of Hammond High School, presented the results of her project titled "Synthesis of a Robust Ligand System for Oxidative Catalysis."

The students presented information and answered questions about their research findings, which were documented in posters outlining each project.

"At Ohio Wesleyan, students do more than just join existing research groups. They are the central researchers in their projects," said Barbara Andereck, Ph.D., director of this year's Summer Science Research Program and an OWU professor of physics and astronomy. "They participate in all the steps of the research process, taking ownership of the successes, the failures, and the knowledge gained.

"Throughout this process," Andereck concluded, "they grow into mature, self-directed, confident investigators who add their own pieces of knowledge to the greater body of scientific understanding."
