Raissa Kanku Participates in Ohio Wesleyan's Spring Break Interfaith Service Week

2018 Apr 3

Raissa Kanku of Honeydew, Gauteng, Democratic Republic of Congo, spent spring break serving others as a member of a 2018 Ohio Wesleyan University Interfaith Service team.

Kanku traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, for a week in March as part of the student-created "Re-New Orleans: Hurricane Katrina Recovery" team.

Nearly 40 Ohio Wesleyan students participated on five Interfaith Service teams.

The students and their faculty-staff advisers traveled to Houston and New Orleans to repair hurricane-damaged homes; to the Lakota Nation in South Dakota to help rebuild Lakota-Anglo relationships and support Native American youth; to Philadelphia to explore multiple faith traditions; and to Mexico to examine the economics of social responsibility and sustainable practices.

Each team also worked to incorporate the program's "four essential pillars" of restorative justice, transformative reflection, substantive community, and conscientious leadership into their experiences.
